The New Days - Seeing the Culture of Nan-Fang-Ao Fishing Villages

            BY 李元YUAN LEE
            IN TAIPEI

A hotel is not the destination of travel, but the starting point of cultural discovery. Mr. Lee renovated a 40-year-old hotel in Nan-Fang-Ao and renamed it 'The New Days'. He hopes that by creating comfortable spaces, he may prolong people's stay at the fishing village, helping them see beyond the fish market and seafood restaurants common to all fishing villages, discovering the deeply-rooted industry culture and the hardship of a fisherman's lifestyle.

Nymphs, Duns, and Spinners: the Making of a Hatch Guide

            BY ANN MILLER
            @ VOL 4 ON FEB 11, 2016

Ann Miller has a love for bugs & fishing, who knew! And she tells us all about it in 6.6 minutes.

Ann’s most recent project stemmed from her love of fly fishing and teaching. While teaching beginning and intermediate fly fishing schools, she became frustrated with the lack of comprehensive Midwest information on insect hatches, taxonomy, behavior, and flies to match them. An aquatic biologist, she decided to tackle the world of bugs head on, and the result is the Hatch Guide for Upper Midwest Streams. The field guide was published in January, 2012 (Frank Amato Publications).

"Adding insult to injury" is thankfully a phrase Rob Conte is unfamiliar with. Oh, he's had injuries: between his work life as a wildland firefighter and river guide, and his pastimes of mountian biking and snowboarding, injuries pretty much come with the territory. But Rob usually does not have to deal with the "insults", as his close network of family and friends supported him every step of the way as they "played through the pain" together.

Collin Hamman never takes his time for granted and makes a point of using each moment as a possibility for inspration. His graphic design and illustrations are heavily influenced by his time spent in the wilderness of Montana where he sees constant opportunity for the next t-shirt, logo, or printed design work that may come his way. Being self-employed as an artist is never easy, but when you mix pleasure with work the way Collin does, you will always come away fulfilled.

            PKN Sacramento Vol. 8

Last month's PechaKucha Night in Sacramento Vol. 8 was again held at the Level Up Lounge -- here's hoping plenty of glasses of "The Pecha Kucha" got served -- and organizer Claire Obenson sends in this report. The last PK Night went very well. We had seven presenters (including me) at Level Up Lounge in Sacramento: fashion designer Pamela Desrochers (special guest presenter), designer extraordinaire and Romp Creative co-founder Jake Favour, 19-year-old artist Stephanie Karapinar (our youngest ever presenter), moi, architect and artist Merle Serlin, designer and fisherman Scott Vaughn, and virtual designers Justin & Laura Wood. The lounge typically features the work of a different artist each month. This month, the featured artist was Merle Serlin whose work is beyond description. Her landscapes are sown on fabric. I think most of the presentations were quite original, yet quintessentially Sacramento. Some examples include Scott Vaughn's presentation on Fly Fishing and Pamela Desrochers' highly accessible fashion designs. Justin and Laura Woods virtual design work was unlike anything we've ever seen. Jake Favour was bursting with design ideas he would like to implement or see implemented -- his "Balloon-Enabled Pizza Picnic Delivery" was a fan favourite. Stephanie Karapinar had some fabulous charcoal sketches and futuristic photoshop creations. My presentation was on Hip Hop Architecture, whom some compared to late artist, Keith Haring. Honestly, I "sampled" from "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt -- I call it Klimting! The March flyer is a hip, superfly version of American Gothic. Our next PKN will be in August, themed "Hot August Nights." We have announced a competition to design a poster to advertise the event.

            Piers Mansfield Scaddan

We end this week's round of presentation highlights with this one from Cape Town-based furniture and interior designer Piers Mansfield Scaddan. Extreme Ice Fishing

What's not extreme about freezing temperatures and hours of focus on a little red bobber? In today's Presentation of the Day, "Extreme Ice Fishing" from PKN Bemidji Vol. 16, John Eggers makes a pretty convincing case for the idea that ice fishing really ought to be considered an extreme sport. In a very humorous telling, John gives us the inside angle on the gear, technology, and gruff, rugged, manly demeanor necessary to endure this cold, unforgiving lifestyle.
